Had a rather uneventful evening at the Monkey last night. I managed to work this track in towards the end of my set. It's delightful to see people recognize (yet not recognize) a cut. You can see them sort it out. This is Prince Fatty taking on Cypress Hill.
I played my monthly residency at Red Star last night. Old School. One of my favorite things to do is to throw on an original tune and then drop the corresponding hip-hop track that sampled it. I wanted to play Biggie's "Going Back to Cali", which uses the same beat as EPMD's "You Gots to Chill" but in order to play that you have to go back to Zapp & Roger's "More Bounce to the Ounce". So I threw all three in the cooker. Dig.
The original groove....
Then, Erick and Parrish.....
Finally, Biggie (the beat drops @ 1:15)....
Fishbone was one of those bands that fell between the second (Madness, The Specials) and third (Reel Big Fish, Less Than Jake) waves of ska. They toured for years, put on a helluva live show but never really got their due (in my opinon). I heard this cut again yesterday and it brought an enormous grin to my grill. Love it - a blitzkrieg ska tune about the Russian and Cuban nuclear threats in the 80's. One things for sure - these cats were Way Gone.
And watch them kill it live in Tokyo.....
This guy....
And in case you missed the first one.....
