This past Christmas my wife got a pair of tickets to see David Sedaris from her mother. She has seen him before, I had not - although I have read most of his books. Hearing writers read their own material is a treat most times but Sedaris is the king. His comedic timing and cutting wit are unmatched. When I was touring the country in my Dodge Caravan with a rock band the only audiobooks we listened to were David Sedaris stories. For hours we would howl as he spun tales, one after another. Last night we settled in at the historic Virginia Theatre and let him dazzle us. Here's a clip from him reading at the Village Voice a few years back. Enjoy.
Going to see Atmosphere this weekend - the the billiionth time. The nice weather recently has me feelin' like this.
At Record Store Day last weekend I copped this 45. I have it on display in my office with the likes of "The Super Bowl Shuffle" and a Pac-Man picture disc. This cut was HUGE. Let's go back to a time when The Fresh Prince was a great storyteller (instead of an overpaid actor). Yup.
Many a purist have argued against modern tools but I'm here to tell you that samplers are instruments. And in the right hands they can be magical - enter, Tha Trickaz. Dig this video and then share it everyone.
I love tracking down samples used in hip-hop. It's important to me to discover where the ideas came from and study those recordings - find out why those flavors work. Big Jacks OG Recipe goes digging hard and the results are fantastic. Get some.
