Throwback Thursdays: The Fresh Prince
At Record Store Day last weekend I copped this 45. I have it on display in my office with the likes of "The Super Bowl Shuffle" and a Pac-Man picture disc. This cut was HUGE. Let's go back to a time when The Fresh Prince was a great storyteller (instead of an overpaid actor). Yup.
Feel Good Fridays: Dayne Jordan
When he's not globetrotting with DJ Jazzy Jeff, Dayne Jordan is busy making a name for himself as a fresh face in hip-hop. Dig this cut called "Einstein".
Throwback Thursdays: Fresh Prince & Jazzy Jeff
Say what you will about Will Smith's obnoxious film career - back in the day He's the DJ I'm the Rapper was a must-have. Big ups to my man Delayney for playing this cut last night.
Throwback Thursdays: DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince
It was 1988. Will Smith had just come to us as a charming, tongue-in-cheek rapper from Philadelphia. His first hit single, "Parents Just Don't Understand", went through the roof and paved the way for his impending television and film career. When my mother first heard this song she was convinced that I wrote it. Seriously. It took a considerable amount of time to explain to her that I did not write what was the most popular song in the country at the time. She remains skeptical to this day.
I always wondered though, if his mom had such bad taste in fashion why did she own a Porsche?
Real Talk Tuesdays: J-Live
In 2007 DJ Jazzy Jeff ('member him?) dropped an incredible collection called The Return of the Magnificent, which featured collabs with Posdnous (De La Soul), Method Man, Biz Markie and J-Live. On the J-Live tune, Jeff took the infamous Allen Iverson rant about "practice" and made it a hot track. J-Live rips the absolute TRUTH - including some close-to-home lyrics about what it's like to be a successful independent artists these days. Dig.
