Eminem had the best selling album of 2010 with Recovery, a record that tried (and succeeded) to emulate the ring-tone anthems that crowd the upper half of the charts. I've been severely disappointed in his art for a number of years now. I consider the first two releases (Slim Shady LP from 1999 and the Marshall Mathers LP from 2000) to be were the real gems are. But the first time I heard Marshall was on the 1998 Cali Kings Mixtape Volume 1 where he freestyled over the KRS-One track, "Still #1". This verse is incredible.
I miss you, Marshall. If you ever escape the illuminati, write more raps like this one.
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones were a hard working third-wave ska band for 14 years before they caught their big break. They ran for another 6 years before going on hiatus in 2003. Frontman Dicky Barrett is now the announcer on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Their 1992 EP, Where'd You Go? featured a couple of surprising covers (Metallica's "Enter Sandman" and "Sweet Emotion" by Aerosmith). Dig em. They're way gone.
Ever have anticipation build so heavy in your throat that it's hard to swallow? Me too.
Anticipation, Anticipation
Is making me late
Is keeping me waiting
The Mrs. has been tooting this trumpet for several weeks now so you may already be aware. But in case you missed it, Jenny Slate has launched a web series called Bestie x Bestie. She has also produced a video where she voices a bashful shell named Marcel. You may remember Jenny from her sole season (2009-2010) at Saturday Night Live. You may also remember the reason she left. One thing is clear - she's a badass.
In 1990 I won a b-boy battle at a school dance - the prize was Mantronix This Should Move Ya on vinyl. Sadly, I lost it sometime in the early 90's between colleges. The song that always stuck with me though was "Sex-N-Drugs-N-Rock-N-Roll". Dig it.
