Real Talk Tuesdays: The Wire
My wife and I finally started watching The Wire. It's excellent. The theme song, of course, is "Way Down in the Hole" by Tom Waits. The series uses different renditions for each season and in my opinion, no one can touch the original. Dig.
Real Talk Tuesdays: Tom Waits
I've talked about Tom Waits before and by the looks of it, I'll be talking about him for some time to come. He doesn't seem to slow down or fade. Here's the latest single from Bad As Me called "Hell Broke Luce". A march-worthy wartime tale directed by Matt Mahurin. Real talk? Why can't everyone be as cool as Tom Waits?
Way Gone Wednesdays: Tom Waits
Tom Waits is an original. A gravel-throated, foot stompin' Coney Island carnival barker who has kept us entertained for four decades now. I remember seeing him in films such as The Outsiders, The Fisher King and Dracula before I was ever really familiar with his records. His new album, Bad As Me, drops October 25th. Here's the single followed by the video for "I Don't Wanna Grow Up" (1992) directed by none other than Jim Jarmush. Way gone.
Real Talk Tuesdays: Atmosphere
I can't tell you how much God Loves Ugly hit home for me - especially at that time (2002). Slug's raps about being an independent, Midwestern artist in his 30's were so uniquely personal. I mean, I LOVE Elvis Costello and I LOVE Tom Waits - but they don't speak to me on the same level as Slug. Dig this.
Now I'm sleeping on floors of temporary friends
But I'm keeping the store front as clean as I can
And I'm sweeping the sky for today's revelation
And I'm needing some time and some proper ventilation
