Throwback Thursdays: The Chi-Lites
I heard The Chi-Lites' "Have You Seen Her" on the way to work this morning. Love this cut. Even back when MC Hammer tried to muck it up. Here they are doing a super-soulful yet trippy rendition of it on Soul Train back in the day. Dig.
Madhouse Mondays: Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes
As I mentioned earlier, my son is on summer vacation and I've been waking him up by bursting into his room singing various selections (from multiple decades and genres) at the top of my lungs. Today was "If You Don't Know Me By Now" - made famous in 1988 by Simply Red - but originally recorded by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes in 1972. I sang this aloud the entrie bike ride this morning (also, I've been biking to work). Dig this appearance on Soul Train and more specifically, dig these goddamn jumpsuits.
Throwback Thursdays: Sylvia Robinson
One week ago we lost Sylvia Robinson, a hip-hop pioneer. Sylvia was the founder and CEO of Sugar Hill Records which brought us, of course, The Sugar Hill Gang and raps first single, "Rapper's Delight". Here she is in 1974 performing "Sweet Stuff" on Soul Train. If the groove sounds familiar, it's because J Dilla sampled the mess out of it for his cut, "Crushin' (Yeeeaaah)". Dig.
