J Rocc (founder of the World Famous Beat Junkies) has been doing it (and doing it well) for the past two decades. Here's a tasty remix of his own tune. Head nod worthy. Yup.
I love to praise this Minneapolis band but today it's time to pick on them. Sean Daley has been influential to me not only as a lyricist but as an independent midwestern musician. They have certainly grown and mellowed but in the early days, Sean was accused of being a tad mysoginistic. However, on the 2002 cut "Like Today" (from Lucy Ford) Slug embarassingly misprounounces Ani DiFranco while trying to express his love for "all women" (@ the 1:32 mark). Nothing looks worse than trying to branch out from your own genre only to show that you don't know what you're talking about. Oops.
"from Anne Landers, to Ani DiFranco to Orphan Annie
I love all women, but most of them just can't stand me"
Brooklyn label RVNG Int'l has launced a series they call FRKWYS (Freakways) in which contemporary artists are matched up with their elders in a cross-genre, remix, repurposing project. This installment sees Sun Araw and M. Geddes Gengras paired up with The Congos. The result is way gone.
What can I say about the good Reverend Al Green? He's a legend and he always sends us reeling with those soulful pipes. Here's a redux by scratchandsniff from his 2008 record, Lay It Down. Get some.
Fatlip, the slacker clown from The Pharcyde gave us the incredible solo cut, "What's Up Fatlip". Still one of my favs. I usually scoff at any retreatment of the classics, but Breakbot was able to put a tasty spin on it. Dig.
