Real Talk Tuesdays: Stupid rules
Folks. If you have a rule (or a law) that is severly underwritten and/or outdated - don't be afraid to call for change. Some of these are downright silly (did you know that in Winona Lake, Wisconsin it's illegal to eat ice cream at a counter on Sundays?). This week in California, Harbor City Narbonne high school girls basketball team was ousted from their state tournament for wearing pink-infused uniforms in support of breast cancer awareness. The powers that be stated "Uniform colors may only be a combination of the official school colors". What a crock of shit. Read the whole story here. Let's do better, humans.
Way Gone Wednesdays: Kentucky basketball
Your 2015-2016 NCAA Champions....the Kentucky Wildcats. Honestly, I'm not sure they will even lose a single game this year. Coach Calipari has a special squad on his hands - actually, he has two. He is mass subbing his starters for another 5, equally huge, equally talented bunch. In the first 13 minutes of the game last night all 10 of those players had already scored. They're good. They're scary good. Look for them in March.
Madhouse Mondays: Buzzer Beater
My Park District team finished 5-3 on Saturday. All 3 losses were 4 points or less. We were tough to beat. Had a great time with the boys this year but I'll likely be hanging up my whistle for awhile. As seasons start to come to a close and March Madness starts to build, we hope to see the impossible. For example, take this buzzer beater by Khalil Edney of New Rochelle for the NY High School State Championship.
Throwback Thursdays: Bobby Brown
Back in 1988 when our basketball team had road trips, we would load up and head out to some remote Indiana town. The driver would always play (by request) one of the following albums: Motley Crue's Dr. Feelgood, AC/DC Back in Black or Guns 'N Roses' Appetite for Distruction. You could always find me with a pair of headphones rockin' the Def Jam catalog or in some cases, Don't Be Cruel by Bobby Brown. Still love the slow jam, Roni. Dig it.
