My new mix, Ladies First, is a tribute to the female emcee. From the conscious to the good old fashioned braggadocio, it's all here. All the eras are represented as well - Old School (Queen Latifah, J.J. Fad), Mid School (Lauryn Hill, Missy Elliott) and the New School cats (Angel Haze, Nitty Scott). Turn it on, turn it up.
While making this mix I was reminded of the pure irreverence and downright misogynistic tone of hip-hop's second wave. The days of braggadocio and simple turf pride were surpassed in this era by street cred and pimp talk. Two things I realized during the making of this mix - A) I no longer listen to a lot of misogynistic music and B) as a pre-teen/early teen boy, these songs didn't influence me to disrespect women - hell, I was happy if a girl ever talked to me. Dirty raps just made us horny. This mix is for entertainment purposes only (and maybe a little dancing).
This is a mix that has been brewing in my head for the better part of a year. I wanted to make a mix for you to fire up if your house party is jumping. Or if you're alone with your partner, give it a spin. I guarantee someone is getting turned on. This one, like most of my mixes, is PG-13, so put the kids to bed first.
