Throwback Thursdays: Laid Back

I was 9 years old and making the most of the Midway at the Parke County Fair - which usually consisted of cheap, dangerous rides and hard-to-beat carney games.  I was in the Tilt-a-Whirl when I heard this song come on.  They system was surprisingly loud and I fell in love with this groove.  I included this song on my Old School Mix Vol. 1.  I'm not sure I've ever seen the video until today.  I give you, Laid Back - "White Horse".  Stay off the coke, people.

Way Gone Wednesdays: Pharoahe Monch

Yep, he made the blog two days in a row.  Just to show that I'm not doggin' Pharoahe Monch, here's his new single, which qualifies as Way Gone.   It kicks off with the worlds most underrated/underappreciated MC, Jean Grae, then you'll hear Monch completely DESTROY the track before letting lightweight Royce da 5'9" bring up the rear in disappointing fashion.

Real Talk Tuesdays: Pharoahe Monch

Real Talk Tuesdays will be my weekly effort to explore lyrics and movie quotes.  Some will be showered with accolades while others will be exposed for their logical flaws.

For instance, this week we look at "Simon Says" by Pharoahe Monch (1999).  One of my favorite hip-hop anthems.  This song was responsible for the downfall of the Rawkus label (after using an uncleared sample from the Godzilla score).  In the second verse (around the 2:00 mark on the video below) he starts to boast about New York - the roughnecks, the cars, the night life - but he miscalculates and claims that, in New York, "shit don't start jumpin til after 12 pm".   Hmmm.  I think you mean A.M. - unless you're talking about the lunch counter.  Unfortunately he chooses to rhyme this line with "ignorant minds I free 'em".  Dammit Pharoahe, I love you but lemme proof your shit.

Madhouse Mondays: Dancing Guy

Enough said.

Feel Good Fridays:  Spinnerty

My buddy Dan Finnerty (a.k.a Spinnerty) was born and raised here in Urbana but has since relocated to San Francisco Bay area.  He's made quite a name for himself and has such a great feel for soul music.  Dig it.
