Real Talk Tuesdays: Marc Maron

Late last year I stumbled across the WTF podcast with Marc Maron.  Marc is one of those comics that I vaguely remembered from stand up specials but wasn't really on my top 10 list.  And let me say that very few podcasts have kept me coming back for more (with the exception, of course, of This American Life).  WTF is the real deal.  Marc brings in comics and actors into his garage for a sit down.  These sit downs always produce some laughs but the meat is in the real talk.  Discussing drug addiction with Brian Posehn, Andy Dick talking about his first homosexual impulses, Adam Carrolla's hippy parents and Ken Jeong talking about his wife's cancer.  It's real shit, folks.  Dig in.

Madhouse Mondays:  Willy

Dogs are so eager to please....to the point that they will salsa dance for over a minute.

Feel Good Fridays: Mayer Hawthorne

It's the first week of summer and the Cool Kids have teamed up with Mayer Hawthorne to give us the seasons first big jam, "Swimsuits".  We all know the Cool Kids as Chicago's proudest sons since Lupe.  But it's Hawthorne that gets me.  Some may know him as DJ Haircut - but when he showed up at the Stones Throw Records office with an album steeped in Motown goodness, everything changed.  Since then, he's stayed on the road with his band (The County) and is dropping guests hooks like this one left and right.  His debut, Strange Arrangement, by all accounts should have been dismissed as a goof.  But Hawthorne's efforts to make it a genuine collection of motor-city era love tunes allowed it to get over.  I still put it on about once a month.

Dig.

Throwback Thursdays: Frankie Smith

Frankie Smith is as old school as it gets.  He's the man responsible for putting "izzle" on the end of everything (way before Snoop did it).  Dig this groove and see if you can spot where a very familiar sample originated.

Way Gone Wednesdays: Kirk vs. The Gorn

One of the best (worst) fight scenes ever to be put on film.  This is from the 1967 episode of Star Trek entitled "Arena" where Captain James T. Kirk "fights" the Gorn Captain.  Funny how the Gorn can't take a kidney punch but can easily lift (and throw) a 300 pound boulder.  Dig it - it's way gone.
