Throwback Thursdays: The Fat Boys

It was the summer of 1989 and myself and a few friends had all told our parents the "I'm staying with so-and-so" bit - giving us unlimited freedom for the entire night.  The downside is, there is only so much you can do in rural Parke County, Indiana - especially after hours.  Boredom set in and we took refuge at an all night convenience store near Raccoon Lake Camping Grounds.  We made a midnight feast of microwavable pizzas and rotisserie hot dogs.  The store also had a VHS rental section (for the campers) and without any prompting, the crusty attendant put on the 1987 flop The Disorderlies (starring The Fat Boys) for our entertainment.  Terrible movie, but I'll always associate it with that uneventful, unsupervised night.

In the clip below, the boys take on The Beatles' "Baby You're A Rich Man".  Purists will be offended, but remember that they did the same thing to both Elvis and The Beach Boys.

Way Gone Wednesdays: James Brown

He was the Godfather of Soul, the hardest working man in show business and in this 1988 interview on Sonya Live, James Brown was Way Gone.

Real Talk Tuesdays: Ice Cube

Sticking with the Compton theme again this week, this time focusing on Ice Cube's 1993 classic "Today Was A Good Day".  O'Shea waxes poetic about the day he's having and how it all seems to go his way.  But late in the first verse he says, "called up the homies and I'm askin y'all/which park are y'all playin basketball/get me on the court and I'm trouble/last week fucked around and got a triple double!"  Ok... I played basketball in high school and a little college ball and A LOT of pick up ball.  For those who don't know, a "triple double" is when a player accumulates 3 separate stats in double figures (10 or over).  This year in the NCAA Tournament, Michigan State star Draymond Green had 23 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in thier loss to UCLA.  Now... I can tell you for a fact that no one, NO ONE at the park is keeping track of assists.  Or rebounds for that matter.  I always get a kick out of imagining statisticians armed with clipboards sitting on the park benches.  Still a good song, Cube.  Now go make some more of that TBS money.

Madhouse Mondays: Serenading Unicorn

I'm just gonna let this here unicorn tell it like it is....

Throwback Thursdays: Rap All-Stars

It was 1994 and The Arsenio Hall Show was one of the few places for real hip-hop on late night TV.  This collection of talent not only represents the appreciation that the community had for Arsenio but it boasts most of the brightest stars in the mid-school golden era.  See if you know all these cats.
