R.I.P. Amy Winehouse. 2007's Back to Black remains one of my favorite records. I was really hoping that she could pull herself together and coming charging back with more soulful goodness. Alas, she could not. Let this be a lesson to all of us - don't kick people while they're down. There is no "us" and "them" - only "we".
I posted a collab video from Kutiman a few months ago. He's at it again - this time tackling the Led Zepplin classic, "Black Dog". Dig it - feels good.
Herbie Hancock was (and is) a legendary jazz artist. But in the early 80's he dabled in the electro-sounds of hip-hop eventually creating the classic, "Rockit". "Rockit" was the first song to incorporate scratching - thanks to pioneer Grand Mixer DXT. This song was also the soundtrack to my award-winning b-boy performance at the 1984 Parke County Fair in Rockville, IN. This is the only known picture of that event. I went on to dance at the Indiana State Fair and got my ass handed to me by a five-man crew from Fort Wayne. They were cool as shit though.
I may be late to the party on this but one of my more recent discoveries is the hipster-soul of The Stepkids. Looks like they landed a deal with Madlib's own Stones Throw Records. Dig it. It's way gone.
My town is wylin' out. For real. The number of violent crimes has spiked in the past few weeks. Murder, shootings, stabbings, armed robbery, battery, home invasion. The temps go right along with it. Highs in the mid 90s all week. C'mon people. We got to get over before we go under.
